Marcel Krüssmann

Mosaic artist/ sculptor

Schwielowsee, Germany

Marcel 2I was born in Spandau, a suburb of Berlin. I quickly realised that I had been kissed by the muses, because much to my parents' chagrin, I naturally wanted to live out my talents to the full. I began creating sculptures from a wide variety of materials at an early age and learnt crucial lessons about statics and gravity.
Influenced by my parents, I learnt a trade: I became a tiler. In the course of my working life, I got a taste of all kinds of trades, which taught me a wide variety of material processing techniques, which is very beneficial to me in my work as an artist.
The first time I saw the works of Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona was a huge inspiration for me. Together with this very special attitude to life, I was completely overwhelmed and knew that I had to take a different path from now on.
I stopped working in the private sector and started teaching the techniques I had learnt throughout my life in schools.
My favourite materials are metal, cement-based building materials, ceramics, mirrors, all kinds of stained glass, wood and gold leaf. Like a painter, I use the different colours of glass to create certain colour and light effects.
The creative process usually begins with an idea, a thought that I put down on paper as a sketch. Unfortunately for my loved ones, this can happen at any time of day; once the idea is born, I have to capture it: ‘What must, must, otherwise it's lost.’ When I have ‘bitten’ into a work of art, I forget the time around me, so I sometimes work through the night and am amazed when the sun rises.
I am inspired by everything around me, first and foremost by the love of my muse, life and an open mind. A lot of imagination and the still lively child in me accompany me on my creative journey through time. Looking at things differently, adopting a different perspective, is one side of the creative phase involving the elements of water, light, wind and fire.
